Program Overview

FIRE 208.1  Firefighter 1

This course is conducted by Santa Rosa Junior College in cooperation with the Marin-Sonoma Training Officers Association. It is a basic Firefighter 1 Academy, conforming to the standards for certification by the State Board of Fire Services, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, with one exception. This is an "abridged" academy in that it does not include required emergency medical care skills. Training to fulfill these requirements is available through SRJC, American Red Cross, and other local sources.

The academy includes 384 hours of instruction in basic firefighting skills, personnel rules and regulations, professional organizations, elementary fire behavior, fire control techniques, firefighting tactics and strategy, fire ground safety and operations, apparatus and equipment operation and maintenance, fire investigation, report writing, wild land training, and physical fitness.

This is a 12-unit course applicable toward a Certificate in Fire Technology. With a Firefighter 1 Academy diploma and an EMT card, you will have met the academic requirements for certification as a Firefighter. The State Board of Fire Services also requires six months experience as a paid firefighter, or one year as a volunteer, before actual certification is granted.
