The Regional Fire Academy offers the Firefighter I Academy three times a year. It is a basic Firefighter 1 Academy conforming to the State Board of Fire Services and Office of the State Fire Marshal with one exception; it is an abridged academy in that it does not include required emergency medical care skills. Training to fulfill these requirements is also provided at the Public Safety Training Center.
The Fire Academy is presented at the state-of-the-art training tower and facilities of the Santa Rosa Fire Department.
In-service training for firefighters and officers offers two levels of certification by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Fire Technology Certificate/Degree
The Fire Technology Certificate Program offers preservice core courses to SRJC students. The program offers both an intensive training course culminating in a Certificate of Achievement and a general education program leading to the Associate in Science degree from SRJC.

Meet the Fire Technology Faculty
Curtis Newsom
Curtis Newsom is the full-time Fire Technology Instructor at the Petaluma campus. He began his public safety career in 1974 with the Tiburon Fire Protection District. While employed full-time he completed Stanford University Medical Center's Pre-hospital Care Program with a state certification as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic (MICP). Assigned to the Mill Valley fire station he worked 15 years as a paramedic providing advanced life support throughout southern Marin County. Serving as preceptor for paramedic interns spawned a passion for teaching and he began teaching EMT-1, first aid, CPR, and disaster preparation classes. He is registered to teach several fire officer (Level 1) and chief officer (Level 2) courses. After 15 years on the rescue squad he promoted to fire captain, then acting fire marshal, and eventually battalion chief in charge of training for 40 career and volunteer firefighters. He holds state certifications in Fire Officer, Strike Team Leader, and Master Instructor. Curtis is a member of the Office of the State Fire Marshal's PACE II committee and curriculum development committee for instructor ethics. He joined SRJC in 1996 as adjunct faculty teaching in the fire academy as well as semester length courses. Curtis retired from the Tiburon Fire Protection District in 2006.
